ArcGIS Explorer is now available for general download!
- June 11, 2007This is a free, lightweight, Windows desktop application designed for 3D exploration of data from the Internet. ArcGIS Explorer can integrate data from the thousands of existing ArcIMS and WMS websites as well as new sites using ArcGIS Server, plus local data including shapefiles, KML, and various georegistered images. The startup globe engages a satellite display from ArcGIS Online (currently in beta release) which provides global coverage at 500m and 15m plus recent high resolution
(1m) imagery for the United States.
More than just a viewer, ArcGIS Explorer is designed to engage tasks constructed by users of larger ArcGIS desktop and server products. These tasks can range from simple (e.g. identify, find, measure) to complex geoprocessing such as viewshed or demographic analysis performed on data sets available over the Internet.
ArcGIS Explorer requires Windows 2000 or above, and a good strong CPU with plenty of RAM; cache files are generated, and storage limits can be configured to minimize space consumption or maximize drawing speed. (See "System requirements" for more info.)
