Cyber-Enabled Earth Exploration Module 1: Introduction to Volcanoes (Version 2)
The purpose of investigation one is to motivate students to learn more about volcanoes. This is accomplished by first viewing the introductory video, Thanks Volcanoes, where students are introduced to the many benefits of volcanic eruptions, but are also warned of impending danger! Then, using Google Earth, students visit a series of volcanoes, whose past eruptions resulted in high mortality both near to and at great distances from the eruption site.
Investigation two helps students construct knowledge regarding why volcanoes erupt and how the type of eruption and materials ejected determines the morphology of the volcano.
In investigation three, students learn how scientists monitor volcanoes in order to predict eruptions. The investigation is designed to connect students' acquired knowledge about volcanoes to a practical application.
