Presidential elections of 2000 and 2004
Using GIS software students will closely analyze voting patterns by county of the 2000 and the 2004 elections. The lesson will expose students to the ever growing field of GIS and an example of its applications.
We live in a small school district that was predominately agriculture and forestry. The students are noticing a major shift in land use as more land is sold into subdivisions The first object is to introduce GIS as a mapping and information tool. My second objective is to teach students how to make changes to the data layers in a way that will help them understand the economic trend taking place. Given the rate of change, how long will it take for our district’s food producing land to be converted to urban dwellings?
Fire Hydrant Proximity Analysis/Shapefile Creation
Proper fire hydrant spacing in a town or city is a very important issue when considering a fire department’s ability to successfully fight fire. To that end, careful planning of fire hydrant numbers and their proper spacing is necessary. Also, if a town grows larger, officials need to evaluate if there is a need for new fire hydrants in additional locations to ensure that fire fighting water remains close at hand.
Winifred’s Town Council has decided that every structure should have a fire hydrant located within 300 feet. The Council has asked for your assistance in performing a Fire Hydrant Proximity Analysis to help them see if the current fire hydrant locations are adequate or if additional locations need to be added and to report back to them. You have decided to use ArcMap’s ability to do spatial analysis to help you make this determination and its ability to create a map that will aid in your presentation to the council.
