Description:
Abstract:
Abstract - This layer was initiated to provide the National Fire Plan, Cohesive Strategy Team, with the best, currently available data on fire history in the Region One area. A regional fire history grid did exist, but newer data sets were available for 8 of the 13 forests. The previous data, and existing data for the remaining forests was less than compete or non-existent. Data was collected from many sources and combined into a common format across the region. Fire data was obtained from individual forests, a regional fire grid, historical records, and the 2000 and 2001 fire perimeters obtained from the R1 website. The information was collected and put into a polygon coverage to facilitate conversion to ArcGis in the near future. An item for each of 7 decades, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00, was populated with the year of each fire. This also allowed for multiple year fires. This coverage has some information lacking and it would be good to add better data as it becomes available to make the coverage more useful and consistent.
Purpose:
Purpose - The fire history layer was needed to answer some wildlife questions about previous burns in certain habitat areas. Information about fires needed to include the year of the burn and the fire perimeter location. Since some recent forest information was now available and there was some missing data in the regional fire grid, this layer was initiated to provide the best available data for fire history to include the years 1940 to 2001.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Inconsistencies - The individual forest covers were not consistent in collection scale, completeness, projection and method of storage. The 9 individual forests had 9 different ways of storing data, each in their own projection. Also, each had different ideas about completeness for this layer. The B-d data was points only and therefore not usable for this analysis. Nothing unexpected so far. The regional grid of fire history had to deal with the same problems. This means that the grid had many of the same problems too. There was no data from 1988 in the grid. 8 of 13 forests had better data to offer, so we used forest data where we could. The grid was used for data to fill in the B-d, the Helena and the Lolo, all of whom had no data now, and very little from the grid. Fire polygon splitting. In order to separate the grid data by forest, I intersected the grid with ownership. Fire polygons were split at ownership boundaries making multiple polygons. Fire perimeters were also split into multiple polygons due to combining polygons from multiple years, as part of the polygon may have burned in different years. Therefore, to obtain true fire acres for a fire, fire polygons might have to be separated by decade, then, dissolved by year. Fire size. The 2000 and 2001 fire perimeter data was only available for fires over 100 ac. I believe all other data has all fires of all sizes contained in it. The Helena has a total of only 23 fires for this 61 year period. The B-d has a very low total number of fires also. No data for the Custer was available except the 2001 data. When compared to the fire point coverage for the region, for fires over 100 ac, this coverage is missing some fires and has very little data off of forest service land. This coverage has some information lacking especially for the B-d, Custer, Helena, and Lolo. It would be good to add better data as it becomes available to make the coverage more useful and consistent.

Process_Description:
Process - First I evaluated the existing R1 fire history grid. Then I looked at the individual forest data now available. The grid had no data from 1988. There was other data missing or incomplete. I used forest data where I could, as I felt it would be more up to date and complete for 8 of the 13 forests. The grid was used, with other data, to fill in the B-d, the Helena and the Lolo, all of whom had little information in the grid and very little available now. Each forest's fire history data was reprojected to the r1 projection, then, converted to a common polygon format. All the coverages were mapjoined together to form a regional coverage. A polygon coverage was used to be compatible with the expected conversion to ArcGis in the very near future. In order to use the grid data by forest, I intersected the grid with our ownership layer to identify fires on each forest. This caused many fire polygons to be split by ownership. After the grid was converted to polygon format, it too was changed to the common format and information for the B-d, Helena and the Lolo was mapjoined to the forest coverages. To augment the limited data in the grid for these forests, I used union to add other data. The canyon fire perimeter, and some coverages from Anderson on the Lolo, helped to fill in some additional data. The Helena polygons had no year data, but Jeff Jones had a Helena map with year information, so I added year information for 22 fires on the west portion of the Helena for the time period we were after. Several fires on the Lolo were identified for year by Mike Hillis and added in. Then the 2000 and 2001 fire perimeter data for fires over 100 ac were obtained from the R1 web site and added in. The final coverage, firehist, has items for each decade, acres, and forest. The item, forest, was added where the forest information was used. This means that not all fires have the forest item filled in. To obtain more accurate information about each forest's burned acreage, a summary could be run by forest, selected from the owner_r1 layer, for each decade of fires to get a list of fires by forest, by decade. This coverage was put together in Arc 8.1, but has been made compatible with Arc 7.2.
